"Wide
World" is an air travel game where players travel to destinations, accumulate
Product cards, then try to reach the finish. Each player starts by turning
over a Destination card, then throwing a die and begin moving toward that
destination on the board. Once they reach their destination, they collect
a Product card, which has points assigned to it. After getting to all the
destinations their cards indicate, they go to on finish. Players with the
most points wins. The twists in this game are the Weather Guide ... which
can move you around the board ... and Bumping, which happens when another
player lands on an occupied space.
The
history of "Wide World" is, as best as I can determine, the following:
The game was originally published in 1933 but beyond the name and some
minor, common pieces, the older version bears little resemblance to the
1962 version. The 1933 version had airplanes and steamship pieces and your
goal was to travel to Manilla in the Phillipines. There was a major revision
of the game in the 1950s, much closer to the 1962 version. In fact, the
1962 version seems to have added the Weather Guide and some changes to
the rules. I will continue to try to find out more info and update this
as I can.
