"Wooden
Ships & Iron Men" lets John Paul Jones and Lord Nelson sail the seas
again in a ship-to-ship (or fleet-to-fleet) game covering the American
Revolution and Napoleonic Era. Every type of ship that saw action from
1776 to 1815 is represented: frigates, ships-of-the-line, merchantmen,
privateers, sloops, fire ships, bomb ketches and more. Sail ships like
the Ranger, Constellation, Wasp, Vengeance, Constitution and more.
Twenty-seven
scenarios cover the battle of Trafalgar, the Nile and the Chesapeake. Plus
a design-your-own section allows players to re-create more possibilities.
The game system allows for simultaneous, hidden movement using ship logs.
Features include: fouling, grappling, exploding
ships, toppling sails, boarding, melee, drifting, collisions, types of
ammo, raking and more. A Basic and Advanced game. Generally considered
to be one of the best playing Avalon Hill games. Originally published by
Battleline Publications in 1974.
This
is probably one of the most favorite games among gamers. There are, quite
literally, a multitude of variants and scenarios which are available for

An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
