"7th
Fleet" is a refinement of the "Sixth
Fleet" (6th Fleet) game system (and the third in the "Fleet Series").
It pits your skills as either the American or Soviet Navy in the vast reaches
of the Pacific Ocean, from the Sea of Othosk to the Northern Philippines
and from the coast of China to Guam. Players maneuver task forces of ships
and subs, along with air wings, to attack the opposing force. Forces include
U.S., Japan, Soviet Union and China, as well as units from Canada, Vietnam,
North and South Korea, and Australia. Thirteen scenarios, including nine
basic ones, with four campaign scenarios. Hexes are about 45 nautical miles
and game-turns about eight hours. Simple scenarios about two hours. High
complexity.
Other
games in the Fleet Series include "Sixth
Fleet" (6th Fleet), "2nd Fleet"
(Second Fleet), "5th Fleet" (Fifth
Fleet - with a computer version)
and "3rd Fleet" (Third Fleet). None
of the other games were required to play any of the others in this series.
They were all stand-alone games. Avalon Hill had this marked as a "coming
soon" computer game in their catalogs, but I have not seen it listed elsewhere.
Game
components include : 3 Mapsheets, 484 five-eighths-inch Counters (?), 260
half-inch Counters, 3 Scenario set-up cards, 2 Strategic Air displays,
2 Logistics Roster pads, 10-sided Die, Counter tray, 2 Charts / Tables
booklets & Rule book.
Two
players. Ages 12 & up. Victory Games / Avalon Hill from 1987. Design:
Joseph M. Balkoski.
Additional
info: There were articles on this game in "The General" magazine:
Vol.
25 # 2
Vol.
27 # 2
An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
