"3rd Fleet" (Third Fleet) is a refinement of the "Sixth Fleet" (6th Fleet) game system (and the fifth in the "Fleet Series"). It is a simulation game of contemporary naval warfare in the North Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the East Atlantic Ocean. The game takes those three areas and divides them into three separate games, each with its own mapsheet. The players goals are to protect their own forces while inflicting as much damage to the enemy forces as possible. Nine Basic scenarios and three Advanced scenarios are included.

Special game features: Off-map airfields, Stealth fighters, torpedo decoys, long-range SAMs, Seawolf-class subs, at-sea replenishment, satellite detection, mine-sweeping choppers, Soviet "Tbilisi" class aircraft carrier, commando raids and more. Units include U.S. Navy, U.K., Canada, France, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, West Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Soviet, Cuba, Poland, East Germany, Columbia, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil. Typical playing time is one to four hours for the Basic scenarios and nine hours or more for the Advanced scenarios. Medium to high complexity.

The General magazine Vol 27 # 2Other games in the Fleet Series include "Sixth Fleet" (6th Fleet), "2nd Fleet" (Second Fleet), "7th Fleet" (Seventh Fleet) and "5th Fleet" (Fifth Fleet - with a computer version). None of the other games were required to play any of the others in this series. They were all stand-alone games.

Game components include : 3 Mapsheets, 480 five-eights-inch Counters (?), 282 half-inch Counters (?), 2 Display cards, 2 Strategic Air displays, 2 Logistics Roster pads, Counter Storage tray, 10-sided Die, 2 Charts / Tables booklet & Rule book.

Two players. Ages 12 & up. Victory Games / Avalon Hill from 1990. Design: Joseph M. Balkoski.

Additional info: There was an article on this game in "The General" magazine Vol. 27 # 2 with Do-Your-Own scenarios.

An important note regarding Avalon Hill games - It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed, sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more checking to insure its completeness.
