Richthofen's War by Avalon HillIn "Richthofen's War", your Sopwith Camel is revving up, awaiting for you to fly off and meet the Red Baron over the skies of France in this World War I air war game. Thirty-two plane types are represented, including Nieuports, DeHavillands, Sopwith Pups, Sopwith Camels, Albatrosses, Rolands and Fokkers. Seven scenarios are provided, with enough elasticity to provide for 100s of different fights to take place. Players can control one or more planes.

An aircraft status pad works like an instrument panel and allows for players to track their speed, altitude, rate-of-climb, ammunition supply and other critical aspects of keeping your plane in the air. Your gun may jam or you may take a critical hit. Missions can include tactical bombing, trench strafing, artillery spotting, balloon-busting, photo-recon or dogfights. Medium complexity. Typical playing time about one hour.

The General magazine Vol 9 # 5The game originally came in a slide-in, bookshelf game box with a built-in plastic counter tray and Target Damage Table part of the inner box. This was later changed to a more "normal" regular bookshelf box and the Target Damage Table was separate. There was also made available a set of Maneuver Cards with rules which did not come with the game. For those interested in this genre of game, the Maneuver Cards are a must-have, as they add so much to the game.

Game components include : Mapboard, 192 Counters (includes 7 blanks), Aircraft Status Pad, 4 Scenario cards, 2 Dice, Mission Briefing manual & instructions.

Two players. Ages 12 & up. Avalon Hill from 1974.

The General magazine Vol 11 # 6Additional info: There were articles on this game in "The General" magazine:
Vol. 9 # 5

Vol. 11 # 6 Solitaire Variant with 3 Scenarios
Vol. 14 # 4
Vol. 17 # 5
Vol. 18 # 5 Advanced level
Vol. 19 # 3 Historical Scenarios

An important note regarding Avalon Hill games - It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed, sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more checking to insure its completeness.
