"Midway"
re-creates the battle which marked the turning point of the war in the
Pacific. Players move their ships across their own board while searching
for the other player's ships. Located ships are attacked by planes from
a player's carriers or Midway Island. The hidden movement system covers
both ships and planes, which makes for constant intensity. The Japanese
have more planes but the burden falls on them as they also must invade
Midway Island. The Americans must defend as long as possible while destroying
as many Japanese ships as possible.
The
game was later updated and revised in 1992, commemorating the 50th Anniversary.
This was another game in the "Smithsonian Institution American History
Series" (the others are: "Gettysburg", "Battle
Of The Bulge", "D-Day", "Guadalcanal"
and "Mustangs").
It was streamlined and changed to appeal to a broader audience and generally
served as an Introductory Game.
There
was also made available a "Coral Sea" Variant with Map Set & Counters,
plus a "Wargamer's Guide to Midway" booklet for the original version.

NOTE:
To play the above, one must own both "Midway" and "Guadalcanal"
since parts are needed from both games.
There
was also a computer game by Avalon Hill, "Midway
Campaign", although there was no direct connection to the board game
version.
An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
