"Guadalcanal"
(1966 version) re-creates the fierce fighting on the island during World
War 2 beginning on 7 August 1942 which epitomizes the spirit of the Marine
Corps. The game includes 36 Marine battalions, 34 U.S. Army battalions
and 37 Japanese battalions --- each arriving at the island as they did
in real life. Game-turns are one week. Low to medium complexity.
In
1992, the game was revamped to an entry-level war game for beginners using
chess like strategy to change the course of battle. Covered are the Battle
of the Eastern Solomons in August, the Battle of Santa Cruz in October,
and the decisive Battle of Guadalcanal in November. The Allied player must
decide how best to deploy his forces to cover the exposed Henderson Field
and maintain control of the air. The Japanese player, with a more powerful
surface fleet, must try to seize control of the air, while maintaining
surface control during the night. Both sides must be willing to take chances
and fight major battles for control of the prize. This was part of the
"Smithsonian Institution American History Series" (the others are: "Gettysburg",
"Battle Of The Bulge", "D-Day",
"Mustangs" and "Midway").

An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
