"Civilization"
is the game that begins when history begins. Your objective is to gain
a level of overall advancement to which cultural, economic and political
factors are important. The winner will be the player who maintains the
best balance between activities of nomads, farmers, citizens, merchants
and adventurers. Go, therefore, and start at the Dawn of History, where
agriculture has just been discovered. Grow and lead your society, farm,
and build cities through the mists of time to the Age of the Civilized
State --- 8000 BC to 250 BC. Low to medium complexity. Expect to spend
some time on a single game.
Game
components include : Mapboard, 9 sets of Trading Counters (70 per set),
80 Trade Cards (74 regular & 6 blanks), 72 Civilization Cards, Archeological
Succession card, 7 Place Mats, 7 Place cards (1 through 7) & Rules
booklet.
Two
to seven players. Ages 12 & up. Avalon Hill from 1982.
Additional
info: Avalon Hill also published a "Western Expansion Pack" which added
Spain and Britain to the play. This was available only directly from Avalon
Hill through mail order.
In
addition, Avalon Hill published "Advanced Civilization". This was not a
stand-alone game but required a copy of "Civilization". It introduced Credit
Sheets and Point Values allowing games of any length, which shortened the
average playing time (as noted above, the original could be rather long
in playing time). It included 192 Civilization Cards to replace the 72
in the original game, an additional 80 Trade Cards (new calamities and
trade goods) and a comprehensive 48-page Rule book (with rules for an eight
player game).
Further,
there was an "Advanced Civilization" computer
game which put all the above into play.
And,
there were articles on this game in "The General" magazine:

An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
