Air Assault On Crete and Invasion Of Malta by Avalon HillEarly on the morning of May 20, 1941, the German Army launched the first totally airborne invasion in history. The objective: the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. In "Air Assault On Crete", the Allied defense and German attack are centered on the three airfields (Malene, Heraklion, and Retimo) and the port of Suda. The Germans must take one of the airfields to allow their reinforcements to land. The Allies must hold the airfields and port so they can evacuate their specialists and troops. Features include armor breakdown, trucks, a coastal steamer, anti-aircraft units, coastal artillery, air units, glider units, and even the half sunk H.M.S. York. Three mapboards portray the battlefield.

"Invasion Of Malta" (the bonus game) lets the players find out what might have happened if Hitler had decided to invade the island of Malta. Official attack and defense plans re-create the situation.

While both games use the same basic system, each has their own mapboard(s) and playing counters, and each has basic and advanced rules. Medium complexity.

Game components include: 3-piece Mapboard for "Air Assault", one 11" x 16" Mapboard for "Invasion", 520 Counters (includes 60 blanks), CRT card (Combat Results Table), Allied Organization card, Axis Organization card and 24-page Rules booklet.

The General Magazine Vol 15 # 3Two players. Ages 12 & up. Avalon Hill from 1977. Original research & Design: Vance von Borries ; Additional Design & Development: Randall C. Reed ; Additional Research: Andrew Smith.

Additional info: A set of Variant counters for this game was made available by mail, however, there were no rules with the set of counters. Players needed a copy of "The General" magazine Vol. 15 # 3 for the rules. Also, a Mapsheet for a game called "Assault On Cyprus" in Vol. 18 # 3 (uses the counters from the game).

An important note regarding Avalon Hill games - It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed, sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more checking to insure its completeness.
