In
"1776" you can re-fight the battles of Bunker Hill, Lexington, Trenton,
Yorktown and more, and suffer the cruel winters of Valley Forge and Morristown.
As the American player, re-create George Washington's hit and run strategy
--- harassing and evading the British forces. As the British player, surround
and encircle the American armies, forcing them to fight a major battle
before they are ready --- a battle they can not win. The game uses the
Tactical Combat Cards for offense and defense. Includes four scenarios
and campaign game.
Units
represented: Continentals, British regulars, French regulars, Tory militia,
Rebel militia, Indians and naval units. Features include: supply restrictions,
weather restrictions, French intervention, mobilization of militia, forced
marching, fortifications, dragoons, artillery & more. Hexes are about
20 miles and game-turns are month. High complexity. Bookcase / bookshelf
game. Typical playing time for a scenario is about two to three hours and,
for the campaign game, expect to put in eight to eighteen hours.
Those
looking to get the most enjoyment from "1776" should play the full campaign
game. The shorter scenarios do not do the game system justice while the
campaign game allows a good balance and better gameplay. One should also
look for Rule books for the first plus any later editions. In this particular
case, some of the later revisions of the rules did not make for a better
game.
Game
components include : Mapboard, 416 Counters, 16 Tactical Combat
Cards, Terrain Effects card, CRT card (Combat Results Table), 2 Scenario
cards, Reinforcement / Time Chart card, Die and 32-page Rules & Designer's
Notes book.
Two
players. Ages 12 & up. Avalon Hill from 1974.

An
important note regarding Avalon Hill games
- It was not unusual for Avalon Hill to re-publish most of their games
with 2nd, 3rd or more Editions. Sometimes the game components changed,
sometimes they didn't. If your game components do not correspond exactly
with what is listed, do not despair. You may just have to do a little more
checking to insure its completeness.
