"Tabula"
was widely played by the Roman Empire from the beginning of the 1st Century
A.D. and believed to be the forerunner of "Backgammon". The Emperor Claudius
(A.D. 41-54) is said to have had a board affixed to his chariot so that
he could play while travelling! The object is to move the playing stones
around the board attempting to both block each other's stones and to protect
your own from capture.
