"The
science fiction game for everyone" is how "Cosmic Encounter" is billed
--- and is it ever. Assume the role of one of 15 Aliens - challenged to
think like an Alien and respond to other Aliens, each with a unique power.
Although the goal is Universal domination, how it's done is most of the
fun. This started the "franchise" on Cosmic Encounter, with
West End Games re-publishing next, then Mayfair Games and finally Avalon
Hill. Each company generally altered the game in some way, with most of
the changes being subtle.
EON's first 3 expansions
added 35 more aliens, with pieces for up to 6 players. It's fourth expansion
introduced the Flare cards and the fifth introduced Moons. The sixth gave
10 aliens and Lucre, a money system. In the next two expansions, the game
concentrated mostly on basics, with 14 aliens, more Flares, Kickers, Edicts
and Challenge cards. The last expansion (# 9 if you are counting) introduced
Reverse Planet Hexes and the last alien, along with a revised and updated
Rules book which incorporated many of the changes into one place. EON also
published 6 issues of Encounter magazine, which supported
the game.
